More about this voice

What gets through the wall

PartSettingWhat you hear
The wallTreble cut above 900 HzConsonants disappear; vowels and rhythm are all that remain
ThumpBass +3 dB below 200 HzThe chesty boom that carries through solid things
Pitch0 (unchanged)Still recognisably your voice and melody
LevelCompressor 3:1 from -24 dB, then +6 dBThe filtered voice is brought back up so it isn't faint

Acting through a door

  • Let melody carry the meaning. With the consonants gone, listeners follow the rise and fall of your sentence, so exaggerate questions, complaints and laughter.
  • Raise your voice as if you really were in the next room. An argument, a phone call or singing in the shower reads at once.
  • Choose lines the audience can guess. A name being called or a knock-and-answer works; a list of instructions doesn't.
  • Turn your head away from the mic for the far side of the room and back toward it as you 'approach the door'.

Scenes that need a muffled voice

Use it for a character locked in a cupboard or a car boot in a comedy sketch, neighbours overheard in an audio drama, a 'talking with my mouth full' bit, or the moment in a video when someone pulls a blanket over their head. In a group call it works as a quick joke when you pretend to have left the room. The through-a-wall clip cuts at 500 Hz and adds a short 0.6-second reverb, so the voice is clearly in another room. The clip that cuts at 1.6 kHz is much milder: a hand or a scarf over the mouth, with most words still readable.

Free Muffled voice effect FAQ

How is muffled different from the underwater voice?

Underwater adds a wobble and a lower pitch on top of the filtering. Muffled leaves pitch at 0 and only removes the top, so it sounds like a barrier, not water.

Can I muffle one clip inside a video?

Yes. Export that part of the audio, run it through the Online Voice Changer with this effect and place the download back in your edit.

Can I make it sound like a mask or a scarf?

Move the Treble cut up to about 1.6 kHz, as in the milder clip. For a respirator, the gas mask voice is a closer match.
