Three things tape does to a voice

PartSettingWhat you hear
Wow and flutterChorus / vibrato 0.9 times a second, 40% mixThe pitch sags and recovers, like a motor that can't hold speed
Dull headsTreble cut above 5 kHzS sounds lose their sparkle; the voice turns soft
SaturationDistortion drive 0.2, 35% mixLoud words get warm and slightly thick
Low endBass cut below 120 HzNearly all of your chest tone is kept, unlike a radio

Talk like you pressed record

  • Hold your vowels a little longer than usual. The wobble only shows on sustained sounds, and clipped speech hides it.
  • Use a private, diary tone: a date, a name, a message meant for one person later.
  • Stay close to the mic and speak quietly, the way people talk into a handheld recorder.
  • Tape hiss and the clunk of the button are not added. Leave a second of silence at each end and add those sounds from a clip if you want them.

Fresh tape, chewed tape or VHS

The main clip is a decent tape in a decent deck: warm, with a gentle sway. In the second clip the wobble goes to 60%, and the pitch lurches the way it does when a deck has been eating the tape. That suits a horror reveal or a memory going wrong. The third clip moves the treble cut to 3 kHz and adds a 10-bit crusher at 40%. It is duller and grainier, close to the audio track of an old VHS, and fits found-footage videos and retro stream intros.

Free Cassette tape voice effect FAQ

Can I add the cassette effect to a voice memo?

Yes. Open the Online Voice Changer, upload the memo, choose this effect and download the taped version.

Is this the same as a VHS voice effect?

The third clip is the VHS version: treble cut at 3 kHz with a 10-bit crusher. Set those two sliders after the page loads.

Why does my voice go out of tune?

That's the wow and flutter, a pitch wobble at 40%. Lower the Chorus mix for a steadier tape, or raise it for a damaged one.

Does it work for singing?

It processes any sound from your mic, sung or spoken. On held notes the sway is obvious, so start at a lower mix.
