Pick how your avatar moves
Only a microphone, or the simplest start? Open the PNGTuber Maker, pick a starter character and talk: its mouth opens when you speak. Have a webcam? The VTuber Maker's sample 3D avatar copies your head, eyes and mouth. Both are free, with nothing to install, and both take your own art: resting and talking images, or a .vrm model from VRoid Studio or VRoid Hub.
Check your camera and light
For a 3D avatar, run the Face Tracking Test in the room you'll stream from. Face a window or a lamp: a face lit from behind is the first thing tracking loses. Got your own model? Open it in the Model Viewer to check its blinks and mouth shapes.
Put it on stream or in a call
For OBS, set the background to green screen, add the Chrome window with Window Capture and key out the green; the PNGTuber Maker's starter characters also have a one-link Browser Source. For calls, add the free Facecam extension and pick “Facecam Virtual Camera” in Google Meet, Zoom on the web or discord.com.

PNGTubing is the cheapest way to start: no 3D model, no face tracking, just images. A 3D model that follows your face looks more alive, but needs good light and a model file. An AI VTuber is a separate character that talks on its own, often as a co-host.
Planning a persona
A persona is a name, a look and a voice. Can I VTube without a webcam?
