  • The licence pixiv Inc. wrote into the sample VRM file, as the VTuber Model Viewer shows it: everyone may use it as an avatar, personal and corporate commercial use, credit not required

The two VRM Consortium samples carry their terms inside the file, under the VRM Public License 1.0; the table shows what each file says. pixiv's terms for its VRoid samples forbid reselling the files themselves or relabelling them as CC0. Live2D's samples are covered by its Free Material License; Jin Natori and Tsumiki Harugasa are collaboration characters, for non-commercial use only and without edits, and Hiyori Momose's design may not be changed.

More about Free VTuber models

Where to find more free models

  • VRoid Hub: thousands of VRM characters. A model can be downloaded only if its creator allowed it, and the Conditions of use panel on its page lists avatar use, corporate use, commercial use by individuals, redistribution, alterations and credit.
  • BOOTH: search its 3D models for free (0 yen) items. Each creator writes their own terms in the item description, often built with the VN3 License template, where the creator picks every condition.
  • Gumroad, itch.io and Ko-fi: artists give away Live2D and PNGTuber models at $0 or pay-what-you-want. The terms are whatever the artist writes on that page; if there are none, ask before you stream with it.

VRoid Studio is free too. Start from a VRoidPreset sample, change the hair, face and outfit, and export a VRM that's yours.

Check a model's licence before you stream

  1. Open the file in the VTuber Model Viewer

Drop the .vrm into the viewer. It shows the licence the creator wrote into the file, the VRM version and a rig check, without uploading anything.

  2. Read the commercial use line

Monetised streams, sponsorships and paid commissions count as commercial use. Personal-only models are for streams that earn nothing.

  3. Note credit and edit rules

If credit is required, put the creator's name in your stream panel or video description. If edits aren't allowed, don't recolour it or swap its outfit.

  4. Compare with the download page

A store page or readme can add terms the file doesn't hold. Where the two disagree, ask the creator.

Free VTuber models FAQ

Are free VTuber models really free to stream with?

Only if their licence says so. A free download can still be personal use only. The samples in the table above allow streaming, including monetised streams, within the limits shown.

Can I use a free VTuber model on a monetised stream?

Yes, if its licence allows commercial use. For a VRM, open it in the VTuber Model Viewer and read the Commercial use line; for other models, read the terms on the download page.

Can I edit a free model to make it my own?

Only where alterations are allowed. pixiv's VRoid samples and both VRM Consortium samples allow edits; Hiyori Momose's design may not be changed, and Live2D's collaboration characters may not be edited at all.

What is a VTuber model base?

A starting model you customise into your own character. VRoid Studio's VRoidPreset samples work this way: change the hair, face and clothes, then export a VRM.

Are there free 2D VTuber models?

Yes. Live2D gives away sample models such as Hiyori Momose for individuals and small businesses, and artists share free Live2D and PNGTuber models on BOOTH, Gumroad and itch.io. For a PNGTuber, two pictures are enough, and the PNGTuber Maker has six starter characters. For 3D, the VTuber Maker has free sample avatars, three of them CC0.

Can I use a free VRM model without downloading software?

Yes. The VTuber Maker opens a VRM in Chrome and moves it with your face through your webcam, and it can be your camera in browser calls.
