Free avatar for Microsoft Teams
Camera-off days without a blank tile: join Teams in Chrome as a 3D character that moves with you. Free, no sign-up.
Your browser will ask for camera access when you click.
Set it up in Microsoft Teams
01
Start the avatar first
Open the VTuber Maker, click Start camera, keep the sample or upload a .vrm, and click Use as my camera in calls.
02
Join in the browser
From the invite choose Join the meeting now → Continue on this browser and allow the camera and microphone.
03
Select the Facecam camera
On the pre-join screen turn Camera on and choose “Facecam Virtual Camera”. Inside a meeting, use the dropdown arrow next to Camera.
04
Leave Teams' effects off
Under Effects and avatars, keep the background set to none. Blur tries to cut a person out of the picture and can eat parts of a drawn character.
Tested by Facecam team. Facecam extension 2.1.0 (test build) in Chromium 153.0.8010.12 on macOS 26.5.1 (Apple silicon), with Chromium's built-in test camera and microphone, not signed in to any app. We opened the Teams (free) web page at teams.live.com, not a meeting and checked from inside that page that its device list listed Facecam Virtual Camera and got video from it (1280x720). We didn't sign in or join a call there, so Microsoft Teams's own menus in the steps come from Microsoft Teams's help pages (see Sources).
If it doesn't work
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| There's no avatar option under Effects and avatars | That menu's avatars are Teams' own feature, which Microsoft offers in the desktop app. Facecam's character arrives through the camera list instead. |
| The character has a ragged outline | A Teams background effect is on. Turn it off, and choose the backdrop you want in the VTuber Maker instead. |
| The character stops moving when I present | Chrome slows tabs you can't see. Keep the VTuber Maker tab in its own window, not minimised, while you share. |
Teams avatars or a Facecam avatar
| Teams avatars | Facecam avatar | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Teams desktop app for Windows and Mac | Teams in Chrome |
| How you join with it | Camera off, then Effects and avatars | Camera on, Facecam picked in the camera list |
| Character | Teams' own figures | Any VRM model, or the sample |
| Also works in | Teams | Meet, Zoom on the web, discord.com |
If you use the desktop app and your organisation has avatars turned on, the built-in ones take no setup. Facecam covers the browser, guests, and anyone who wants a character that mirrors their expressions.
More about Microsoft Teams
Pick a backdrop that reads as professional
The VTuber Maker's background can be dark, light or any colour. A plain dark or light backdrop sits well in a meeting grid; save green screen for OBS.

Questions
Is my real video sent to the meeting?
No. Face tracking happens on your computer and Teams receives only the character.
Do I need a Teams licence feature for this?
No. To Teams it's a camera, so it works for guests and on Teams (free) as well.
Can I switch back to my real camera?
Yes, with the arrow next to Camera, at any point in the meeting.
