DeepFaceLive alternative for Mac, Windows and any laptop

A DeepFaceLive alternative that runs from Chrome, without Windows-only builds, a DirectX 12 card or OBS and audio-cable setup.

By Facecam team · Updated

Verdict

If DeepFaceLive already runs on your Windows PC and you like its face models, it still works and costs nothing. But it isn't updated any more, it's Windows only, and its video-call guide needs OBS plus a virtual audio cable to keep your voice in sync. Facecam runs in Chrome on Windows, Mac or Linux, appears as a camera in browser calls, and leaves your microphone alone. It costs per minute and doesn't reach desktop apps.

Tested by Facecam team. Facecam's side only: a Jitsi Meet call recorded on the other person's side (from our video call guide) and the extension popup. Facecam extension 2.1.0, signed in, in Chromium on a Mac (macOS 26.5). The webcam played a clip of a fictional, computer-made man. We didn't run DeepFaceLive; its column comes from its README and setup guides on GitHub, checked 2026-10-03.

Facecam's side

Three frames from one Jitsi Meet call as the other person saw it: the same caller as three different built-in Facecam characters
Seconds 4, 13 and 19 of our recording from the other person's side of a Jitsi Meet call, 2026-10-03: three built-in characters, switched from the popup without leaving the call. The man underneath is a fictional, computer-made person.

Where each one wins

DeepFaceLive

Pros

  • Free, with a portable download that needs only video drivers
  • Works in any desktop app through OBS
  • Runs offline on your own PC

Cons

  • Archived: no fixes or updates since November 2024
  • Windows 10 only for the ready-made builds
  • Calls need OBS plus a virtual audio cable and repeater

Facecam

Pros

  • Runs on a Mac too (we tested on one), through Chrome
  • Switch faces mid-call without restarting anything
  • No audio routing: only the camera changes

Cons

  • No free minutes: live face swap needs Premium or Pro
  • Not in desktop apps or on phones
  • Only the face changes; hair and clothes stay your camera's

What archived means for DeepFaceLive

The owner set the repository to read-only. The last builds still download and run, but new Windows updates, graphics drivers or call apps won't get fixes, and nobody answers issues there.

Why DeepFaceLive needs an audio cable and Facecam doesn't

DeepFaceLive shows the swapped face in its own window a moment late. Its guide routes your microphone through VB-Cable and an audio repeater with the same delay, so lips and voice line up in the call.

Facecam replaces the camera inside Chrome, and the call app takes your microphone as usual. The swap adds a short delay to the picture only, so there's nothing to route.

Switching faces

In our recorded call we changed faces seven times from the popup and never had to rejoin. The call kept the same camera the whole time, so the other side saw the new face within a moment.

Questions

Is DeepFaceLive still maintained?

No. Its GitHub repository was archived on 13 November 2024. The builds still exist, but there are no updates.

Does DeepFaceLive work on Mac?

The ready-made builds are Windows 10 only. Facecam works on a Mac in Chrome.

What graphics card does DeepFaceLive need?

Any DirectX 12 card, with an RTX 2070 or Radeon RX 5700 XT or better recommended. Facecam doesn't use your graphics card for the swap.

Will the other person see my real face first?

With Facecam, until the swap is ready (22 to 26 seconds in our test) the camera shows your normal webcam. Pick the camera on the join screen and wait for the swapped face to appear before you join.
