More about this voice

Where the grain comes from

PartSettingWhat you hear
GrainBit crusher 10-bit at 11.0 kHz, 70% mixA fine dusty texture, like an old sampler
Soft topTreble cut above 4.5 kHzNo sharp S sounds; everything feels rounded
WarmthDistortion drive 0.15, 30% mixA slight thickening on louder words
BodyBass cut below 200 Hz, midrange +1 dB around 1.8 kHzA full voice with the rumble taken out

A relaxed read works best

  • Speak softly and close, a few fingers from the mic. Lo-fi is an intimate sound, and a projected voice fights it.
  • Slow down and let sentences end without emphasis. The texture is the interest, so the delivery can be plain.
  • Smile less than you normally would on mic. A bright, toothy tone loses its top above 4.5 kHz and just sounds dull, while a low murmur keeps its character.
  • Use it for short spoken pieces: a tag, a verse, a line of narration between songs.

What people use a lo-fi voice for

The obvious home is music: spoken intros and tags over lo-fi beats, where a clean studio voice would sit on top of the track and not in it. It also suits late-night study and chill streams, cosy podcast segments and vlogs that want a worn, home-recorded mood. The softer clip, with the treble cut at 3 kHz and a 3 dB bass lift, is rounder and sits further back in a mix. The grainier clip, 8 bits at 8 kHz, pushes the texture forward for a beat-tape feel.

Free Lo-fi voice changer FAQ

Can I make a lo-fi vocal for a beat?

Yes. Upload your vocal to the Online Voice Changer, pick this voice and download the processed file to drop into your project.

How is lo-fi different from the bitcrusher?

The bitcrusher page is harsh: 6 bits, fully mixed. Lo-fi uses 10 bits at 70% with the treble rolled off, so it's soft and grainy without breaking up.

Will it remove background noise from my room?

The noise gate mutes the mic between words, but noise under your speech stays. A quiet room still gives the best result.
