Radio discipline sells it

Spell grid references and call signs with the phonetic alphabet and say numbers digit by digit.
Speak in a low, level murmur. The 8:1 compressor lifts it to full volume, and it sounds like someone trying not to be heard nearby.
End each transmission with a clear closing word and wait. Two people talking at once ruins the illusion faster than any setting.
Clip your words short. With the mids pushed at 1.1 kHz, long drawn vowels turn honky.

Three channels, three situations

The main clip is a squad radio in normal contact: rough but fully readable. Add the 7-bit crusher at 60% and the signal starts to break into digital grit, which fits a patrol at the edge of range or a last message before contact is lost. Drop distortion to 0.2 and you get the command post on a clean channel: the same low, compressed voice with most of the gravel gone. Use the clean one for whoever gives orders and the main one for whoever carries them out, and listeners can tell the two ends of the net apart.
