Speaking through a pure pitch shift

Keep your usual speed. A pitch shifter doesn't touch tempo, so there's nothing to compensate for.
Hold vowels a bit steadier than normal. With no other effect in the chain, any wobble of your own is reproduced exactly, just on a different note.
For an upward shift, don't lift your own voice too. Doing both pushes the result toward a squeak; the slider should carry it alone.
Try one sentence at several values before settling. Small moves are subtle, and the further you go the more it sounds like somebody else.

Pitch alone, or pitch with tone?

Pitch moves the note. Tone moves the apparent size of the speaker. This page moves only the first, which is why the Pitch +7 clip sounds like the same person pitched up and not like a smaller person: it is a fifth higher with Tone still at 0. The Pitch -3 clip is the main shift pointed downward.

When the goal is a different person instead of a different note, the male to female and female to male pages move both sliders together. The high pitch and low pitch pages push one direction further.

Does changing pitch change the speed of my voice?

No. Your timing is kept and only the note moves.

What is one step of Pitch?

A semitone, the distance between two neighbouring piano keys. Pitch +7 is a fifth, and 12 steps make an octave.

Can I change the pitch of an audio file?

Will it work on Zoom?

In Zoom's web client, yes: that runs in Chrome, where the extension adds Facecam Virtual Mic to the microphone list. The Zoom desktop app doesn't show it.
