More about this voice

The two numbers inside a bitcrusher

PartSettingWhat you hear
Bit depth6-bitLoudness moves in 64 coarse steps, which adds a grainy hiss that follows your words
Sample rate8 kHzThe top of the voice folds back down as a metallic ring on S and T
Mix100%No clean voice underneath; all you hear is the crushed signal
Pitch0 (unchanged)Your own note, so it still sounds like you
FiltersBass cut below 180 Hz, treble cut above 9 kHzRumble and fizz trimmed off both ends

Speaking into a crusher

  • Keep your volume even. Quiet syllables land on only a few of the 64 steps and break up into noise before loud ones do.
  • Lean on S, T and CH if you want the ring. Soften them if the ringing gets tiring.
  • Let word endings fade naturally. The crusher turns a fading vowel into a crumbling tail, which is the best part of the effect.
  • Hold a steady distance from the mic; moving in and out changes how much grit you get.

Which crush to pick

The main clip is the middle ground: clearly digital, every word readable. The 4-bit clip leaves only sixteen volume steps, so the voice turns harsh and noisy and quiet words drop out. Keep that one for short stingers and sound design. The 12-bit clip at 4 kHz goes the other way: the steps are smooth, but the very low sample rate makes the voice dull and ringing, like a toy's sound chip. Use it when you want the voice to sound cheap rather than broken.

Free Bitcrusher voice changer FAQ

What's the difference between this and the 8-Bit voice?

The 8-Bit voice also raises pitch and clips the sound to imitate an old game console. This page is only the crusher, at Pitch 0, so you can hear what bit depth and sample rate do by themselves.

Can I bitcrush a vocal I already recorded?

Yes. Load the file in the Online Voice Changer, apply the same settings and download the result for your track or video.

Can I blend the crushed voice with my clean one?

Yes. Pull the Bit crusher mix down from 100% and your clean voice comes back underneath the grit.

Does the bitcrusher cost anything?

No. It runs in Chrome on your own computer and needs no sign-up.
