What ages the sound

PartSettingWhat you hear
Small coneBass cut below 450 Hz, treble cut above 2.8 kHzA wooden cabinet set: all middle, no depth
Horn colourMidrange +5 dB around 1.3 kHzThe nasal ring of early microphones
DriftChorus / vibrato 0.8 times a second, 30% mixPitch that sways slowly, like an uneven turntable
Valve warmthDistortion drive 0.2, 40% mixLoud words thicken and blur slightly

Speak like the period

  • Project as if there's no amplifier. Announcers of the era spoke from the front of the mouth with crisp, bitten consonants.
  • Go faster than feels natural and don't drop your pitch at commas. Keep the line climbing until the full stop.
  • Stress the first word of each sentence, the way a headline is read.
  • No crackle or hiss is added, only the tone and wobble. Lay a vinyl noise clip underneath if you want surface noise.

Broadcast, newsreel or worn record

The main clip is a home radio set playing a drama or a variety show. For news, load the newsreel clip. Pitch +1 and the midrange up to +8 dB make the voice brighter and more urgent, the sound of a cinema narrator from the 1940s. The third clip raises the wobble to 50% and adds a 9-bit crusher at 40%, which sounds like a worn shellac record more than a live broadcast. That one is good for flashbacks, 'found recording' scenes and spooky stream intros.

Free Old-time radio voice changer FAQ

Is this the transatlantic announcer accent?

No. The effect changes tone, not accent. It gives the sound of the equipment; the clipped, fast delivery is yours to perform.

Can I use it for a podcast or radio drama?

Yes. Record each part in the Online Voice Changer with this voice and download the files for your edit.

The wobble makes me seasick. Can I remove it?

Set the Chorus slider to zero. The thin, mid-heavy tone stays and the pitch holds still.
