Breathing is your job

  • The noise gate mutes quiet sounds between words, so soft breathing is cut. Breathe in loudly through your mouth before a line, loud enough to open the gate, and the effect turns it into a filter hiss.
  • Speak in short sentences with a breath between each, as if air is rationed.
  • Keep your jaw fairly closed and talk from the chest. A tight mouth matches the 800 Hz box and stops the voice sounding too clear.
  • Stay a hand's width from the mic so the loud breaths don't thump.

Gas mask, masked horror or muffled?

The masked horror voice is a character: deeper, built to frighten. The muffled effect is a wall, with nearly all the words removed. The gas mask sits between them. It is a real person in equipment, fully understandable, at almost their own pitch. That suits survivors, soldiers, hazmat crews and post-apocalyptic roleplay. For more air, the Whisper 40% clip pushes more breath through the filter. For a heavier unit, the Pitch -4 clip, with Tone -2 and distortion at 0.35, sounds like a powered respirator with a speaker on the front.

Free Gas mask voice changer FAQ

Does it add the breathing sound by itself?

No. It colours whatever reaches the mic, so the in-and-out breathing has to come from you. Breathe audibly between lines and it comes out as mask hiss.

Can I use it while wearing a real mask for cosplay?

It runs in Chrome on a computer, so it suits recorded videos and streams more than a convention floor. Record your lines in the Online Voice Changer and play them back if you need them on the move.

Can I use the gas mask voice in a game's voice chat?

Not in the game's own chat, since desktop games don't see Facecam Virtual Mic. Use a Discord call opened in Chrome at discord.com alongside the game.

How do I make it sound more robotic, like a helmet speaker?

Start from the Pitch -4 clip and raise Distortion beyond 0.35. A little Robot on top gives it an electronic edge.
