More about this voice

How six seconds builds a cathedral

PartSettingWhat you hear
The buildingReverb 6 s longA tail that takes six seconds to fade, as under a high stone roof
DistanceReverb 50% mixThe speaker far down the nave, as loud as the room around them
ClarityBass cut below 90 HzNo low boom building up under the tail

Two clips change one thing each. Reverb 2.5 s at 35% shrinks the place to a small stone chapel. Reverb at 25% keeps the full six seconds but brings the speaker close, with the cathedral behind them.

Speak like the room is listening

  • Say four or five words, then wait. A six-second tail swallows anything faster.
  • Keep one steady note in your voice, the way a reading in a church is intoned. Big jumps in pitch pile up into a clash.
  • Project from further back, about an arm's length from the mic, at a calm volume. Shouting fills the tail with harshness.
  • Solemn lines fit: a blessing, a proclamation, a verdict, a sung phrase. Jokes with quick timing don't survive the wash.

Where a cathedral voice fits

It works for moments, not conversations. Tabletop and fantasy roleplay get a priest, an oracle or a king's herald out of it. Streamers use it for an opening line or a mock-serious announcement, then switch back. Singers get a choir-loft sound on slow, held melodies. For a voiceover that has to stay understandable through whole paragraphs, the chapel clip is the safer pick.

Free cathedral voice effect FAQ

Why are my words running into each other?

Each one is still ringing when the next arrives. Slow down, or lower Reverb toward 25% so your direct voice sits above the tail.

Can I use the cathedral effect on a Twitch stream?

Yes, if you go live from Twitch's browser studio in Chrome, where Facecam Virtual Mic shows up as a microphone. Desktop streaming apps can't see it.

Does it change how high or low I sound?

No. Pitch and Tone are left alone, so it is your voice in a very big building. Lower Pitch a few steps if you want a graver speaker.
