How speech turns into a whisper
The Whisper slider at 100% scrambles the tone of your voice so it no longer has a note. What's left is the breathy shape of your words, and that's all people need to understand you. Your pitch isn't moved up or down.
Real whispers have no chest sound, so the preset cuts the bass, takes out some boxiness and brings up the hiss. Whispering makes a voice quieter, so the preset turns it back up to talking volume. It also mutes the mic between words, so the hiss doesn't run on.
Whisper or ghost
The ghost preset uses the same trick at 70%, then adds a slow wobble, an echo and a long reverb, so it floats in a haunted hall. Whisper is dry and close, as if someone is right at your ear. Use ghost for scares and whisper for quiet asides, secrets and calm streams.
Tips
- Speak normally. Actually whispering into the mic is too quiet and drags the room noise up with it.
- S and T sounds get loud. Turn slightly to the side of the mic if they hiss.
- Slow down a little in busy game chats. Without a tone to follow, people rely more on your consonants.
