More about this voice

The parts of the grunt

PartSettingWhat you hear
BulkPitch -6, Tone -5A thick neck and a barrel chest, still roughly person-sized
RaspDistortion drive 0.4, 50% mixGravel on every word
BarkMidrange +3 dB around 800 HzA boxy honk, as if shouted past tusks
ThumpBass +4 dB below 140 HzWeight under hard syllables
Dull topTreble cut above 6 kHzNothing crisp or refined left

Grunt, don't growl

  • Push your lower jaw forward as you talk. It thickens the vowels the way tusks would, and the 800 Hz boost exaggerates it.
  • Short, blunt sentences. Drop the small words; an orc states what it wants.
  • Punch the first syllable of each word, then cut it off. With no reverb, hard stops sound brutal instead of empty.
  • Put grunts and snorts between lines. The distortion turns any throat noise into character.

Orc, goblin or monster?

All three are creature voices. The orc is the soldier: low, dry, close, and clear enough to keep up for a whole session of roleplay. The goblin voice is for the small, sneaky kind of creature. The monster is bigger and less human, more growl than speech.

Two extra clips stretch the orc either way. Pitch -9 with a hall reverb (20% mix, 1.8 s long) is a warchief giving orders to the horde. Distortion 0.2 is a smaller orc that's easier to follow, the pick for long conversations or younger players.

Free orc voice changer FAQ

Is this the orc voice from a specific game or film?

No. It's a generic fantasy orc built from pitch, distortion and EQ, and it uses no audio from any game or film.

Does it work in a game's built-in voice chat?

Not directly: games can't see Facecam Virtual Mic. Have your party talk on discord.com in a Chrome tab and the orc comes through there.

My throat hurts after a while. Am I doing it wrong?

You're probably straining to sound rough. Speak normally and let Distortion 0.4 supply the rasp; that is its job.
