More about this voice

A low voice in a short body

PartSettingWhat you hear
Gruff notePitch -4A lower, older-sounding speaking voice
Short frameTone +2A compact chest: the low note comes from a small, solid body, not a tall one
GravelDistortion drive 0.2, 35% mixRoughness light enough to talk through all evening
BarrelMidrange +3 dB around 1.2 kHzA forward, stubborn honk
Tight low endBass cut below 160 Hz, bass +3 dB below 180 HzThump without boom

Play it stubborn

  • Speak from the front of your mouth with a tight jaw. Clipped, hard consonants sound more dwarven than any accent.
  • Grumble on the way into a sentence. A low hm or a huff ahead of the first word picks up the distortion nicely.
  • Roll or tap your r's if you can, and keep vowels short and flat.
  • Complaints, boasts, prices and toasts are the lines that suit it. Keep the pace brisk: this voice is dry, so there's no tail to wait for.

Tavern, tunnel or fireside

  • As loaded: dry and close. Tavern talk, bargaining, party banter.
  • With a 2-second reverb at 25% and an echo every 0.2 s at 20%: down in the tunnels. For scenes in mines and great halls; ease your pace a little.
  • Tremble back on, the chorus wobbling 5.5 times a second at 100%: an old dwarf telling the story. For the elder, the loremaster, a narrated prologue.

Free dwarf voice changer FAQ

Why is Tone raised if the voice is meant to be low?

Pitch sets the note and Tone sets the body. Lowering one and raising the other gives a deep voice in a small frame, which is the dwarf.

Does it add a Scottish or any other accent?

No. Effects change the sound of your voice, not your pronunciation; any accent is yours to perform.

Can I use it for an online tabletop session?

If the group's voice call runs in a Chrome tab, such as discord.com or Google Meet, pick Facecam Virtual Mic as the microphone. Installed desktop apps don't list it.
