How to talk like the caller
- Start friendly. The first few lines should sound like a wrong number, so keep your tone light and curious while the effect supplies the menace.
- Ask questions and wait. Leave a full second after each one; the noise gate shuts the line between words, and that dead silence is the uncomfortable part.
- When the call turns nasty, drop your volume rather than your pitch. The compressor lifts a murmur to full level, so a near-whisper sounds closest to the ear.
- Don't shout. Shouting pushes the distortion into mush and the phone-call feel is lost.
Which of the three clips to use
The main clip is the balance: rough enough to unsettle, clear enough for a conversation. If friends on a call keep asking you to repeat yourself, switch to the version with distortion down to 0.15. It's a cleaner line that still sounds like a handset, and it suits long horror-trivia games or reading a script. The Pitch -7, Tone -4 version is a heavier caller. It works for short lines in a video or a stream intro, but a naturally deep speaker may turn muddy there, so nudge Pitch back up if words blur.
