Performing the masked voice

  • Keep your voice quiet and tense, as if holding back anger. The compressor brings quiet speech up, so restraint still sounds loud.
  • Break sentences into short clipped pieces. Distortion smears long vowels, and stops between phrases keep it readable.
  • Save one burst of volume for the key word. A sudden loud syllable drives the distortion harder and sounds like the mask overloading.
  • Stay about a fist away from the mic so consonants cut through the grit.

Kylo Ren, Darth Vader or Masked Horror?

The Darth Vader-style voice is lower (Pitch -6) and cleaner: its helmet is a slow flanger and a short reverb, so it sounds large and calm. This one is only three steps down and gets its character from distortion, so it comes across younger, angrier and more electronic. The Masked Horror preset, which this page starts from, is a generic disguised caller with no named character behind it. Choose the Kylo Ren style for confrontations and outbursts, and the Vader style for slow commands.
