Read it like a public notice

  • Read, don't act. The genre's dread comes from an official voice giving calm instructions about something terrible.
  • Borrow the wording of bulletins and training tapes: where to stay, what not to look at, when further notice will come. Avoid slang and contractions.
  • Leave long gaps between sentences, where a caption card would sit on screen. The gate mutes the mic below -50 dB, so the gaps are empty.
  • Stress nothing. If one word needs to disturb, say it exactly as evenly as the others.

Where the voice belongs

This is mainly a voice for video: fake broadcasts, found-footage shorts, alternate-reality game clues, lore narration over still frames. Record the narration in the Online Voice Changer and download it for your editor, or type the script into the Character Voice Generator and add an effect if you'd rather not use your own voice. Live, it works as a stream segment or a tabletop handout read aloud. The second clip sets Pitch to 0 for an emergency broadcast read in a flat voice. The third drops the crusher to 5-bit, a tape copied too many times, which is best kept for a few words at a time.

Free analog horror voice generator FAQ

Can I generate an analog horror voice from text?

Yes. The Character Voice Generator reads typed text aloud and can add an effect on top. For your own voice, this page or the Online Voice Changer applies the tape settings.

Does it add VHS hiss or static?

No. It degrades the voice itself and adds no background noise, so layer hiss, hum or a test tone in your video editor.

How do I make it sound like an emergency alert?

Set Pitch to 0, as in the second clip, and read in a level voice. Alert tones and beeps aren't part of the effect; add those separately.

Will it work on a YouTube or Twitch live stream?

Yes, in the browser streaming studios those sites offer in Chrome, where Facecam Virtual Mic can be chosen as the microphone.
