The parts of the tape voice

PartSettingWhat you hear
DepthPitch -7, Tone -4Very low and heavy, as if the machine were dragging
GravelDistortion 0.35, 55% mixed inA dry rasp under the words
Tape wobbleChorus 0.3 times a second, 30% mixThe note drifts slightly, as a stretched cassette does
Small speakerBass cut below 100 Hz, treble cut above 3.2 kHzDull and boxed in, like a handheld tape player
BodyMidrange +2 dB around 700 HzA woody, hollow middle, so it isn't mistaken for a phone

Read it like a recorded message

  • The effect lowers your voice but does not slow it. Speak at about half your usual speed yourself; the pace is most of this character.
  • Keep it flat. No anger, no rising questions. He explains rules calmly, and the calm is the threat.
  • Address one person and lay out a choice: what they did, what they must do, how long they have. Instructions suit it far better than jokes.
  • End each sentence downward and stop completely. The gate closes the mic below -50 dB, so the pause comes out as dead air.

Where a tape voice fits

It's a voice for set pieces. Use it to read the rules of a game night, an escape-room briefing, a forfeit in a party game among friends who are in on it, or the cold open of a horror video. For video, add the 9-bit crusher at 8 kHz from the second clip: a worn cassette left for the player. The third clip adds a 1.5-second reverb at 20%, the tape playing in an empty room, which suits a stream scene with nothing else going on. In back-and-forth chat the slow delivery gets tiring quickly, so save it for the announcement and then switch back.

Free Jigsaw voice changer FAQ

Is this the actual voice from the Saw films?

No. Nothing here is taken from the films; it's a sound-alike made from a pitch drop, distortion and a tape-style wobble, with no official connection to them.

Can I make a Jigsaw-style message for a video?

Yes. Record the line in the Online Voice Changer with these settings, download it, and drop the file into your edit.

Why doesn't it sound slow enough?

Because the tool shifts pitch live without stretching time. Slow your own reading down and lengthen the gaps between sentences.

Does it work in Zoom?

In Zoom's web client in Chrome, where Facecam Virtual Mic shows up in the microphone list once you've pressed the calls button on this page. The installed Zoom app doesn't list it.
