What makes the clown voice wobble

PartSettingWhat you hear
HeightPitch +3, Tone +2Higher and smaller than you: a grown-up playing a children's entertainer

Performing the clown

  • The sing-song has to come from you. Slide upward on the last word of a friendly line, as if talking to a small child; the effect adds the shake but not the melody.
  • Switch moods mid-sentence. Start sweet and high, then say two or three words in your lowest, flattest voice. The contrast is what makes it nasty.
  • Stretch your vowels. A wobble 6.5 times a second needs a held sound to show, and clipped words lose it.
  • Offers and invitations fit best: a treat, a balloon or a game promised a little too eagerly.

Three clips, three distances

  • Main clip: the clown nearby, clear enough for talking in a call or on a stream.
  • Reverb 4.5 s at 45% with an echo every 0.26 s: calling up from the storm drain. Words overlap, so give one short line at a time and keep it for intros and scares.
  • Distortion off and the wobble down to 40%: the clown before the teeth show. It's the easiest to follow, and the one to pick for longer speech or a party clown with the horror taken out.

Free Pennywise voice changer FAQ

Is this Pennywise's real voice from the films?

No. It's an imitation made with pitch, vibrato and reverb, with no audio from any version of It, and it isn't an official voice.

Will the sewer reverb come through in a Discord call?

Only with Discord's noise suppression turned off, since it otherwise trims the tail. Join from discord.com in Chrome and select Facecam Virtual Mic.

My voice is already high. What should I change?

Bring Pitch down a step or two and keep the wobble. The settings assume an average adult voice, so a higher one can end up squeaky at +3.

Can it laugh?

It changes whatever you give it, so the laugh is yours to perform. A stuttering, breathy giggle works well because the vibrato breaks it up further.
