More about this voice

One effect does almost all of it

A ring modulator multiplies your voice by a steady tone. At 30 Hz that tone is too low to hear as a note, so it chops the voice into a rapid, grating flutter. The Robot slider on this page is that effect.

PartSettingWhat you hear
Ring modulatorRobot 30 Hz, 100% mixThe whole voice fluttering, none of it left clean
OverdriveDistortion 0.5, 70% mixA harsh, shouted, speaker-in-a-casing edge
CasingBass cut below 250 Hz, treble cut above 5 kHz, midrange +5 dB around 1.5 kHzA hard, nasal, boxed-in tone

Deliver it in staccato

  • Split words into syllables and give each one equal force, with a tiny gap between them.
  • Start a line level and climb in pitch and volume toward the end, as if the anger is building.
  • Pitch is left at 0, so raise your own voice a little and make it nasal.
  • Use commands, threats and reports to a superior, and repeat the key verb.

Which buzz to pick

  • 30 Hz with distortion, the main clip: the full harsh voice, for commands.
  • Ring modulator at 50 Hz: a faster, angrier buzz. It suits a more agitated Dalek.
  • Distortion off: only the ring modulator, as the effect was first made. Cleaner, and better for longer dialogue.

Free Dalek voice changer FAQ

Is this the same effect the TV series uses?

It is the same kind of effect, a ring modulator at about 30 Hz. It isn't the show's audio or an official voice: you give the performance and the browser applies the modulation.

Can I go live on YouTube or Kick as a Dalek?

Yes, from the browser streaming studio of either site in Chrome, with Facecam Virtual Mic set as the microphone.

Why is it so hard to understand?

At 100% mix nothing of the clean voice is left. Speak in separated syllables, or lower the Robot mix a little.

Does it work with a deep voice?

Yes. Speak a little higher and more nasally than usual, or move Pitch up a few steps, so the words stay sharp.
