Sound like a man leaving a message

  • Use your normal pitch. Nothing is shifted here, because the character is an ordinary employee; the acting carries it.
  • Ramble. Start a sentence, correct yourself, add a nervous filler, and never quite admit how bad things are. The effect can't add hesitations, so write them into the line.
  • Hold the mic close and talk quietly, as into a handset late at night.
  • Greet the listener, give instructions, sign off. A message has a beginning and an end, and nobody answers back.

Phone Guy, telephone or walkie-talkie?

The telephone voice is the same line with nothing else on it: clean enough for a live call sketch. Phone Guy adds the tape, so it sounds recorded and old instead of live. The walkie-talkie voice is harsher and clipped, a radio rather than a wire. Here, the first variation (6-bit crusher, distortion 0.5) is the message after years of replays, and the second turns the crusher off for a fresh recording that is still plainly on a phone line.

Free Phone Guy voice changer FAQ

Is this the real Phone Guy recording?

No. It's a sound-alike effect on your own voice; nothing from the games is used.

Does it change how deep my voice is?

No. Pitch stays where it is. Only the phone band, the crusher, the tape wobble and a little distortion are applied.

Can I make a night-shift message for a video?

Yes. Record it in the Online Voice Changer with these settings and download the result. The voice is modelled on a recorded message, so files suit it well.

Will it work on an actual phone call?

No, it doesn't run on phones. It works in calls held in a Chrome tab on a computer, such as Google Meet or discord.com.
