Set it up in Riverside
01
Build the episode's board
Put the intro, outro and stingers on the Facecam soundboard in running order and click Use these sounds in calls. A clip can be up to 30 seconds.
02
Open the studio in Chrome
Hosts go to their studio; guests open the invite link. Both land in the lobby with a video preview.
03
Pick the microphone in the lobby
Next to the preview, use the dropdown menus to set the microphone to “Facecam Virtual Mic”, and choose your headphones as the audio output.
04
Turn off your echo cancellation before recording
In the People panel on the right, switch echo cancellation off for yourself. Riverside only lets you change it before or after a recording, not during one.
05
Leave noise reduction off
Under Studio settings → Recording, keep noise reduction off for takes with sound effects. It treats effects as noise.
Tested by Facecam team. Facecam extension 2.1.0 (test build) in Chromium 153.0.8010.12 on macOS 26.5.1 (Apple silicon), with Chromium's built-in test camera and microphone, not signed in to any app. We opened riverside.com, not a signed-in studio and checked from inside that page that its device list listed Facecam Virtual Mic and got sound from it. We didn't sign in or join a call there, so Riverside's own menus in the steps come from Riverside's help pages (see Sources).
If it doesn't work
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| The sounds are in the call but missing from the recording | Noise reduction was on during the take. It can't be undone on that track; record the segment again with it off. |
| I can't change echo cancellation | You're mid-recording. Stop, change it in the People panel, and start a new take. |
| No Facecam mic in the lobby dropdown | You opened the Riverside desktop app, or a browser other than Chrome. Open the studio link in Chrome with Facecam on. |
| My level jumps when a clip plays | Riverside's auto volume control is reacting to the clip. Turn it off under Settings → Open all settings → Recording → Audio. |
Live sounds or sounds added in the edit
| Played live with Facecam | Added afterwards in an editor | |
|---|---|---|
| Guests react to it | Yes, they hear it in the moment | No |
| Can be re-balanced later | No, it's in your voice track | Yes |
| Extra editing time | None | Some for every sound |
| Best for | Live shows, banter, quiz formats | Polished, scripted episodes |
Riverside records each person's track on their own computer and uploads it. Because Facecam's sounds arrive through your microphone, they sit inside your track at the level you played them. If you want full control in the edit, add music later instead.
More about Riverside
Magic Audio and sound effects
Riverside's Magic Audio cleans a track after recording by reducing background noise and reverb, on its paid plans. Run on a track that contains sound effects, it may thin them out. Listen to the enhanced version before you publish.

Questions
Does the soundboard get its own track in Riverside?
No. It shares your microphone track, mixed with your voice.
Can a guest use it?
Yes. A guest who joins in Chrome with Facecam picks the same microphone in the lobby.
Do I have to wear headphones?
Yes, once echo cancellation is off. Otherwise other people's voices come out of your speakers and into your track.
Does it work for a Riverside live stream?
The sounds are part of your mic, so they go wherever your studio audio goes.
