More about this sound

About our version

Four seconds of a medium-sized room, with cheers on top of the clapping. It fades out instead of stopping, so you can stop it early with Esc.

Where canned applause comes from

Studio television in the 1950s had a problem: live audiences didn't laugh or clap on cue. Sound engineer Charley Douglass built a machine, nicknamed the laff box, that played recorded laughter and applause on demand, and sitcoms used it for decades. Studio audiences got the APPLAUSE sign. Playing applause from a soundboard is the same trick, and in a call it carries the same joke: everyone knows it's fake.

Which take for which moment

The main take is a warm room for real congratulations. Small group is five people being polite, which suits a modest win or a nice try. Slow clap is one person alone and works both ways: sarcastic on its own, or the start of a big moment if you follow it with the stadium take. Golf clap is soft outdoor applause, the quiet acknowledgement of a well-placed shot, and the driest joke of the five.

Questions

Can I make the applause longer?

Press the pad again as it ends, or make a longer clip with the AI Sound Effect Generator (up to 10 seconds).

What does a golf clap mean?

Quiet, polite clapping, the kind golf crowds give so they don't disturb the next player. Used on purpose elsewhere, it's mild praise or gentle sarcasm. Our Golf clap take is the soft outdoor version.
