More about this sound
About our version
It's under a second: a dry, woody knock with a hint of hollowness. Short and sharp, so it works even at low volume.
Where the bonk meme comes from
Cartoons have used a wooden knock for a hit on the head for as long as there have been cartoons. The word took off as a meme around 2020, with images of a Shiba Inu raising a baseball bat over another dog, captioned bonk. Since then, bonking someone in chat means a playful telling-off: you said something you shouldn't have, and the bat comes down.
Three more bonks
- Frying pan: a metal clang instead of wood. Louder and sillier, and the one that reads best in an edit.
- Double bonk: two knocks, for when the first one clearly didn't get through.
- Dizzy: the knock and then a twinkle of circling stars, about a second longer. The best ending for a bit.
- In a call, the plain bonk is the one to spam. At under a second it never covers more than a word.
Questions
How short is the bonk?
About 0.8 seconds. That makes it easy to spam on the soundboard without overlapping your voice for long.
Is this the bonk from the dog meme?
It's our own take on the same cartoon knock, made for Facecam from a description, not cut from a video. It plays the role the meme's bonk does.
