More about this sound

About our version

Our sting is about two and a half seconds with brass and timpani, ending on a low held note. The last hit is the loudest, so it lands on the reveal.

Where dun dun dun comes from

Three falling notes have meant trouble since radio drama, and the four-note opening of the Dragnet theme made the idea famous in the 1950s. Online, the sting got its second life in 2007 with Dramatic Chipmunk, a few seconds of a prairie dog turning to the camera over a dramatic orchestral sting. Since then the sound means one thing: that was a twist, and we're pretending to be shocked.

Four other takes

Single stab is only the last hit, for a reveal with no build-up. Horror trades the comedy for dark strings and low brass, if the twist really is bad. Synth plays the three hits on an 80s synthesizer, good under retro edits. Organ is the daytime soap version, melodramatic and long, about three seconds. In a call, the main take is the safe choice; the organ is funnier but needs a moment of silence around it.

Questions

Is it the sting from an old TV show?

No. It's an original orchestral sting made with AI for Facecam that follows the same idea: three falling hits.
