Where is the huh cat sound from?
The meme is a cat. Ben, a chubby black-and-white cat whose owner films him begging for food, stares into the camera mid-meow in a short TikTok clip first posted in 2021. In December 2022 another creator dubbed a human "huh?" over that meow, timed so it looks like Ben is asking the question himself, and plenty of viewers believed he was. The dub took off in May 2023, spread as a reaction on its own, then came back later that year when people paired it with other animal videos and green-screen edits. Where the "huh" audio itself came from has never been traced.
Since then the huh works without the cat: one confused syllable, a beat after someone says something baffling, usually on a held stare. That's the moment this page is for.
More about this sound
About our version
Ours lasts 0.74 seconds: one man's voice, dry and close, with the pitch bending up on the end. It was generated from a written description, so it's nobody's real recording and not the dub from the cat clip.
Four more takes sit next to it: a deep, slow huh from someone who gave up following, a squeaky one, a woman's voice and a long, drawn-out huuuh. The squeaky take is the closest to the high, cat-like huh most people picture.
It's short enough to fire mid-conversation without talking over anyone. On the brainrot board it sits between the glitch and the vine boom.
Make your own huh cat edit
- Download the MP3, or the squeaky take for a higher, cattier huh.
- Put it on the frame where your subject stops, stares or opens its mouth.
- Hold the shot for a second after it: the silence after the huh is half the joke.
- Live instead? Send the board to Facecam and press the pad in a Discord or Meet call.
Questions
Is this the huh cat sound?
No. The clip people share is a dub of unknown origin over a cat video. Ours is an original "huh?" made with AI for Facecam, so you can use it anywhere, including in videos you monetize.
What is the huh cat's name?
Ben. His owner posts him on TikTok, and the "huh" was dubbed over one of his meows in late 2022. Ben never actually said it.
What does "huh" mean in memes?
Total confusion: the reaction to a statement, a clip or a plan so baffling that a full sentence isn't possible. It's close to bruh, but bruh is disappointed and huh is lost.
Can I make it sound even more confused?
Send the board to Facecam and say it yourself with the chipmunk or helium voice on top, or press the pad twice quickly for a double take.
Can I use the huh sound as a notification?
Yes. At 0.74 seconds it's about as long as a text alert. On Android, download the MP3 and pick it under Settings, Sound; an iPhone needs custom sounds added as a ringtone first.
Can I use it in CapCut, TikTok or Premiere?
Yes. The MP3 drops into CapCut, the TikTok editor, Premiere and any other editor as a normal audio clip. It's our own recording, free to use in videos you monetize.
