Do AI Voice Changers Sound Real?
Do AI voice changers sound real, or just less fake than a pitch shifter? We put one sentence through seven AI voices and six classic voice effects and measured all thirteen.

Short answer
Mostly, yes. In our test, seven AI character voices scored 3.83 to 4.31 for naturalness on a 1 to 5 scale, close to the original voice's 4.24, while six classic voice effects scored 1.32 to 3.36. The effects that stayed natural still sounded like the original speaker, and the ones that hid the speaker sounded processed: only the AI voices were both natural and a different person.
Most pages on this question explain the theory and stop there. We wanted numbers, so we ran one sentence through both kinds of voice changer and let three open models score the results: how natural each version sounds, how much it still sounds like the original speaker, and whether the words survive.
How did we compare AI voices and voice effects?
We gave both kinds of voice changer the same sentence in the same voice. The sentence, "Hi! This is my new voice. Pretty fun, right?", was read by a text-to-speech voice, so there was no real person in it and every run started from identical sound.
- Voice effects: six presets from our free Online Voice Changer (Announcer, Radio, Old Man, Villain, Deep Voice and Demon), with no slider changes.
- AI voices: seven of the ten character voices in our AI Voice Changer (Movie Trailer Narrator, Wrestling Announcer, Anime Villain, Pirate Captain, Fantasy Wizard, Horror Narrator and Late-Night Radio DJ). Our samples of the other three start from a different, higher synthetic voice, so we left them out.
- Naturalness: UTMOS, a model trained to predict the 1 to 5 score a listening panel would give. The untouched original scored 4.24.
- Same person or not: a speaker-recognition model (ECAPA) that gives 1.0 for the same voice and drops toward 0 for a different one. SpeechBrain's default cut-off for "same speaker" is 0.25.
- Words: Whisper speech recognition, counting how many of the nine words it got right.

Which sounds more natural, an AI voice or an effect?
The AI voices sounded far more natural. All seven scored between 3.83 and 4.31, an average of 4.08, against 4.24 for the original. The six effects averaged 2.25, and the two that changed the voice most, Deep Voice and Demon, scored 1.40 and 1.32.
| Version | Kind | Naturalness (1–5) | Like the original (0–1) | Words right |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original voice | None | 4.24 | 1.00 | 9 of 9 |
| Anime Villain | AI voice | 4.31 | 0.20 | 9 of 9 |
| Horror Narrator | AI voice | 4.28 | 0.12 | 9 of 9 |
| Movie Trailer Narrator | AI voice | 4.23 | 0.34 | 9 of 9 |
| Fantasy Wizard | AI voice | 4.11 | 0.19 | 9 of 9 |
| Wrestling Announcer | AI voice | 3.94 | 0.30 | 9 of 9 |
| Pirate Captain | AI voice | 3.84 | 0.31 | 9 of 9 |
| Late-Night Radio DJ | AI voice | 3.83 | 0.08 | 9 of 9 |
| Announcer | Effect | 3.36 | 0.70 | 9 of 9 |
| Radio | Effect | 2.95 | 0.82 | 9 of 9 |
| Old Man | Effect | 2.76 | 0.70 | 9 of 9 |
| Villain | Effect | 1.70 | 0.24 | 9 of 9 |
| Deep Voice | Effect | 1.40 | 0.21 | 9 of 9 |
| Demon | Effect | 1.32 | 0.01 | 6 of 9 |
Naturalness isn't everything. Radio is meant to sound like an AM radio, thin and crunchy, and it does. A low score there means the effect is working. The useful comparison is between versions that try to sound like a person: Villain against Anime Villain, Announcer against Wrestling Announcer.
Does an AI voice sound like a different person?
Mostly, yes. The speaker model put the AI voices between 0.08 and 0.34, near or below its 0.25 "same speaker" cut-off. Movie Trailer Narrator (0.34), Pirate Captain (0.31) and Wrestling Announcer (0.30) landed just above it, so the speaker model still heard a little of the original voice in those three.
To check the scale, we scored two control pairs. A different sentence read by the same synthetic voice scored 0.77, and a different synthetic voice scored 0.11. So a score of 0.2 or 0.3 is much closer to a stranger than to you.
The effects show the trade-off in the chart. Announcer, Old Man and Radio stayed natural-ish (2.76 to 3.36) but scored 0.70 to 0.82 for sounding like the original: a transformed you. Villain and Deep Voice pushed the pitch far enough to reach 0.24 and 0.21, and their naturalness fell to 1.70 and 1.40. An effect can't redraw a voice. It can only stretch the one you have, and the further it stretches, the more it sounds processed. How pitch and formants (the resonances that make a voice sound big or small) do that is in how voice changers work.

Do AI voices get your words wrong?
Not in our test. Whisper got all nine words right on all seven AI versions. The one version that lost words was an effect: on Demon it heard "my new thoughts, pretty far away" instead of "my new voice, pretty fun, right", 6 of 9 words. Heavy effects can blur the sounds that tell words apart.
AI voice changers can garble words they didn't catch, especially in mumbled or noisy audio. Our sentence was clean and clearly spoken, so treat 9 of 9 as the best case. The character voices have no noise removal option, so record them somewhere quiet.
When is a voice effect the better choice?
A voice effect is the better choice when you want an obvious effect, need it live, or want it free. Effects run on your device, so they're instant: our six renders of the 3.6-second clip took 33 to 411 ms each in Chromium. Nothing is uploaded, and a robot, a demon or an old radio is a job for an effect, not an AI voice.
- Live calls and streams: our AI voices aren't in calls yet. For a live voice on Meet, Zoom on the web or discord.com in Chrome, the free Real-Time Voice Changer uses effects.
- Long or many files: the Online Voice Changer is free with no sign-up. The AI Voice Changer needs a plan after the free daily clip, for recordings up to 5 minutes.
- A believable different person: use the AI Voice Changer. Every AI voice in our test was both more natural than any effect and closer to a stranger than to the original.
How do you compare them on your own voice?
Record one line
Record 15 seconds or less in a quiet room, in the character's pace. The AI keeps your timing and emphasis, so a slow, dramatic read makes a better Movie Trailer Narrator.
Run the effect
Open the Online Voice Changer, upload or record the line, pick a preset such as Villain and download the WAV.
Run the AI voice
Open the AI Voice Changer, pick a voice under Characters (the free daily clip covers these), upload the same file and click Change voice. Download the MP3. Beyond the free clip it needs a plan.
Listen on headphones
Play the two back to back. Listen for a buzzy or hollow sound on the effect and smeared words on either. On the AI version, listen for any trace of your own voice.
What didn't we test?
- Real people. We used one synthetic voice and one clean sentence. A real mic in a real room adds noise and echo, which can make either kind sound worse. We didn't measure that.
- A listening panel. UTMOS predicts what listeners would say. It's a good guide to naturalness, but it isn't people.
- The exact same take. The AI samples were made from a separate reading of the same line by the same voice (2.5 seconds against our 3.6). The 0.77 same-voice control is why we think that matters little for the speaker scores.
- Everything else. We didn't test the AI Voice Changer's ten stock voices, conversion times or other companies' AI voice changers.
Questions
Can people tell you're using an AI voice changer?
Less often than with an effect. In our test, AI character voices scored 3.83 to 4.31 for naturalness against 4.24 for a real-sounding original, while big effects like Deep Voice scored 1.40. A noisy recording or mumbled words make any voice changer easier to spot.
Is Facecam's AI Voice Changer free?
Free to try: one clip a day of up to 15 seconds in a Characters voice, with no account. After that it needs a plan, and a change that fails isn't charged.
Why does my voice changer sound fake?
Big pitch effects stretch your own voice instead of replacing it, so they sound processed. In our test, Deep Voice and Demon scored 1.40 and 1.32 out of 5 for naturalness. Use a smaller shift, or an AI voice if it has to sound like a real person.
Can I use an AI voice live on Discord?
Not with Facecam's AI voices yet. For a live voice on discord.com in Chrome, the free Real-Time Voice Changer uses effects, which add only about 20 ms of delay.
Does an AI voice changer keep my timing?
Yes. Facecam's AI Voice Changer keeps your words, pauses and emphasis and changes only the voice, so it fits back under a video without re-syncing.
